TWO DAY TRAINING: September 19-20, 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
PRICE: $500 – General admission; $450 – PHAUS member
LOCATION: Cityview 1
INSTRUCTOR: Florian Antretter, Fraunhofer IBP
REQUIRED: WINDOWS Laptop (or WINDOWS capable MAC)
Taught by one of the authors of the software, this two-day program will do a deep dive into dynamic modeling, comfort analysis, multi-zone analysis, and hygrothermal modeling in WUFI. Whether you’re a CPHC® who had an introduction to WUFI Passive during training, a user of any of the other WUFI suite programs, or an experienced PHPP user who wants to take things to the next level—you’ll find this workshop invaluable to your practice.
Course instructor Florian Antretter, Building Physicist and Group Manager at Fraunhofer IBP, is one of the developers of the WUFI Passive/Plus platform and knows the software better than anyone else. He is a fantastic instructor and his numerous trainings with the PHIUS community have consistently garnered rave reviews. Take advantage of this opportunity to learn from the best and gain an in-depth introduction to the advanced dynamic modeling capabilities of the most advanced passive building modeling tool on the market.
3: ADVANCED PHIUS+ 2018 COMMERCIAL/LARGE MULTIFAMILY WUFI PASSIVE ENERGY MODELING
ONE DAY WORKSHOP: September 19, 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
PRICE: $250 – General admission; $200 – PHAUS member
LOCATION: Cityview 2
INSTRUCTOR: Prudence Ferreira, CPHC, PHIUS Certified Trainer, Passive Science; Maren Longhurst, CPHC, PHIUS Certified Trainer, Sam Rodell Architects
REQUIRED: WINDOWS Laptop (or WINDOWS capable MAC)
Passive building has moved quickly into larger multifamily and commercial building typologies over the past two years and it has become apparent that larger buildings require critical additional skills from the CPHC. Prudence and Maren both have been on the forefront of passive commercial and larger scale multifamily design in their practice and will present an overview and step by step guide of how to best set up the energy models for these larger building typologies. Don’t miss this class if you are moving into bigger buildings, it will prove invaluable!
Learning Objectives:
- Understanding the differences between SF, MF and Commercial/Institutional PHIUS+ Projects
- Defining logic and PHIUS+ approach for process loads
- Understanding effect of process loads on design criteria
- Practice modeling a PHIUS+ 2018 commercial project in WUFI Passive
4: INTRO TO PASSIVE HOUSE PRINCIPLES – Local Project Case Studies
ONE DAY WORKSHOP: September 19, 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
PRICE: Only $5!
LOCATION: Harborview 1 & 2
INSTRUCTOR: Katrin Klingenberg, CPHC, PHIUS Certified Trainer, PHIUS
Registration required – Only $5!
Are you new to passive housing and need a crash course in passive building fundamentals? Then this workshop is for you! We will start with an overview of passive house history, current certification trends and policy efforts to move passive houses and buildings forward in this country. Then we will discuss in detail the underpinnings and the rational for passive building standards and the five core principles/strategies that are employed when successfully designing a passive house. Two teams local to the North East will show examples of realized passive house projects including a small multifamily project in the afternoon and discuss why they are convinced that passive is the building system of the future.

PRICE: Only $5!
LOCATION: Harborview 3
INSTRUCTOR: Siga, Instructors TBA; Prosoco, Instructors TBA
Registration required – Only $5!
This workshop will demonstrate materials and skills necessary to apply airsealing methods correctly. Two leading airsealing system manufacturers, who’s products are commonly used in passive projects, will showcase their products and teach hands-on best practice installations.
6: PHIUS+ MEP DESIGN FOR LARGE MULTIFAMILY AND COMMERCIAL PROJECTS
ONE DAY WORKSHOP: September 20, 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
PRICE: $250 – General admission; $200 – PHAUS member
LOCATION: Cityview 2
PRESENTERS: Prudence Ferreira, CPHC, PHIUS Certified Trainer, Passive Science, Galen Staengl (CPHC and PE)
This workshop will take a look at successful systems design for PHIUS+ projects. Galen as the mechanical engineer on the project and Prudence as the lead CPHC have worked together on large scale passive multifamily and commercial projects and will share their lessons learned and their protocols that they developed for those projects and that they found to work best. They have pioneered what is often lamented about: a successful integrated design process of MEP design and passive building envelope optimization. They will share during this workshop:
- Introduction to PHIUS+ MEP in large buildings…the big picture
- MEP Design Guidelines
- PHIUS+ MEP Protocols and Calculations
- PHIUS+ MEP Pre-certification/Certification Requirements
- PHIUS+ MEP essentials for Construction Admin
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
- Understanding differences in large building MEP design approaches between code and PHIUS+ buildings
- Identify PHIUS+ MEP prescriptive requirements and design guidelines
- Define PHIUS+ MEP related protocols and utilize calculation tools/approaches
- Describe MEP best practice with respect to the PHIUS+ certification process and construction administration.
7: MICROGRID DESIGN FOR MULTIFAMILY WITH PHIUS+ AS BASELINE
ONE DAY WORKSHOP: September 20, 8:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.
PRICE: $250 – General admission; $200 – PHAUS member
LOCATION: Harborview 3
PRESENTER: Marc Rosenbaum, South Mountain, John Sarter, SolLux Alpha
An all-renewable energy economy will require rethinking the existing grid – and rethinking the design of buildings at the core of a grid! These new grid design and building design strategies need to work together and be integrated. We’ll take a look at a brilliant multifamily microgrid case study and the strategies employed to first reduce demand load, including PHIUS+ certification. We will identify what the project is actually using for energy through a hands-on optimization exercise, and how that energy breaks down by end use.
